George Washington Is A Liar!

By Jane | March 15, 2010

Now that I have your attention let me explain exactly what I mean. Money is often referred to by the president whose picture is on the front. A one dollar bill may be referred to as a George Washington, a five dollar bill as a Lincoln and so forth. So for the sake of this little essay, the George Washington I am referring to is a general reference to money.
In the book of Mark, chapter four, Jesus states that money is deceitful. In fact, He goes on to say, it is so deceitfully powerful that it can actually choke the  force of the Word of God in your life. What in the world was Jesus trying to tell us? How can money be deceitful?
First of all, let’s look at a definition of the word deceitful. Webster’s dictionary states that deceitful means to be false, to lie, to cause to accept as true or valid what is false or invalid. In other words, money can lie to us. Money leads us to accept as true something that is false.
How in the world can money lie to us? The last time I held George, Abe and Ulysses S. Grant up to my ear I didn’t hear a thing. Money speaks, but not in words as much as in promises. In our culture having lots of money seems to guarantee several things: to make us happy, to cause us to feel successful and fulfilled, and to answer all of life’s dilemmas. But Jesus said that money is deceitful which means that those claims are not true.
Then why in our society do we feel that money can do all these things? Why are we so easily deceived into thinking that money can do and bring so much into our lives?
Come back next week and find out!
