More of Him, Less of Me

By Bunny | June 3, 2010

“One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek, inquire for, and insistently require: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord (in His presence) all the days of my life, to behold and gaze upon the beauty (the sweet attractiveness and the delightful loveliness) of the Lord and to meditate, consider, and inquire in His temple.” Psalm 27:4

If we desire to hear from God, then seeking Him must be a priority in our lives. David summarized life’s one requirement in the verse for today. He required God’s presence as a vital necessity in life. David had enjoyed many opportunities to succeed and gain confidence. Empowered by the presence of God, he had killed an imposing giant with nothing more than a slingshot and five little stones. God chose this simple shepherd boy to become king of Israel even though he was the youngest brother of a family of men. His eventual fame and wealth offered everything most people might think would bring satisfaction.

David’s pursuit of more of God, even after experiencing God’s presence in many ways, should give us a realization that we must continue seeking God no matter how many victories we have enjoyed. After all, even David needed to know God more intimately. The time we spend with God in His Word, talking to Him, being in church, all helps us in causing Him to be bigger in us than us being bigger in us.

Many people want guidance from God, but they don’t want to lay aside other things in order to hear His voice. It takes discipline to say “no” to the flesh and things we may want to do at the moment. And the things we may want to do are not bad, they are just taking the time away from us when we should be using that time to build our relationship with God. David narrowed down everything he wanted to just one thing—more of God all the days of his life, and less of him. I believe the only thing that truly satisfies the longing within us is to know God more intimately today than we did yesterday.

James 4:8 says, “Come close to God and He will come close to you.” Not everyone is willing to pay the price required to be close to God. Not everyone is willing to simply take the time required or make the investments needed for spiritual growth. God doesn’t ask for all of our time, just some of it. He certainly wants us to do things we don’t consider “spiritual”. He wants us to enjoy life. Like sports, vacations, reading, walking on the beach, exercising. Multitude of things we can do to take care of our emotional needs as well as our physical needs. Our spirit man must take priority in the maintenance part, but He wants our other areas to be met as well. We just need to know and keep things in the proper perspective. Balance. Say “balance”. That is the way that we keep Satan from having a foothold into our lives. Satan goes about seeking those whom he may devour, and they are the ones that allow their lives to get out of balance.

Getting to know God is a long-term investment to a long-term relationship. So don’t get discouraged if you don’t get instant results, or see immediate change. Be determined to honor God with your time and you will reap the benefits. Let our goal be—More of Him, and less of us.
